Cambodia’s 2023 Salt Production Up Nearly 150%

Phnom Penh: Cambodia's salt production witnessed a significant jump in 2023, with Kampot and Kep provinces jointly producing 81,154 tonnes, a 148.9% increase compared to 32,900 tonnes in 2022, according to a report by the Ministry of Industry, Science, Technology and Innovation.

Domestic Supply and Export Potential: Notably, 64,732 tonnes of salt produced in 2023 were sold domestically, eliminating the need for imports. This highlights the potential for salt exports in the future.

Extensive Salt Fields and Heritage Preservation: Cambodia currently boasts 3,987 hectares of salt fields, with the majority (3,489 hectares) located in Kampot province. 191 salt farmer groups contribute to this production, carrying on a long tradition of salt production in the region. Recognizing the historical significance of these fields, Prime Minister Hun Manet has emphasized the importance of vigilant management and conservation efforts.

Strategic Importance and Production Goals: The Prime Minister, speaking at the closing ceremony of the Ministry's annual meeting, stressed the strategic importance of salt production and urged its further development. He noted the current market price of salt at 10,000-12,000 Riel (US$2.5-3) per 50kg sack, indicating potential economic benefits.
